365 Blog Challenge: Post #66
This week the hot mess also known as Charlie Sheen called his former Two and a Half Men co-star, Jon Cryer, a troll. Sheen is apparently super mature. I took offense to this attack on Cryer because #1 I loved him as Duckie in Pretty In Pink and #2 I think that he has a small resemblance to my handsome hubby. Oh yeah, and #3 I think I saw him at the Columbus Circle Border's once. He was very short and we looked him up on IMDB and it said he was 5'9 which either is a blatant lie or it wasn't actually Jon Cryer that I saw in the literature section.
Anyways, I was very proud of Cryer for not letting the crazy train, also known as Charlie Sheen, get the best of him. Here is his response from Conan:

#61 Reading Material
365 Blog Challenge: Post #61
I've worked the last three nights and for those of you who know me best, you know I am terrible at three-in-a-rows. I work 12.5 hour shifts and it takes me 45 minutes to an hour to get home so these shifts allow for nothing but work, food and sleep, literally. Occasionally, I am able to blog in between shifts while I eat, but I guess since I was getting back in the hang of things after having 13 days off straight, I just couldn't do it this time. Plus, I was crabby.
I did, however, have time to read some interesting articles over the last few days and I thought I'd post them here for your enjoyment:
#1 Sheen is Surrounded by Coterie of Enablers - If anyone has been following celebrity news lately (or even watching CNN's Piers Morgan) they know that Charlie Sheen is a hot mess. News just came out today that he was fired from Two and a Half Men. Between drug fueled, hotel-wrecking escapades and berating his producer on national TV, he appears to be in a bit of trouble (though he talks as though HE is fine and dandy...can we talk about denial?) This article highlights the difficulties in the entertainment industry (i.e. money-making industry) with getting someone help when he or she is making many people a great deal of money. Priorities?
#2 Why Do Writers Abandon Novels? - We talked about this in my creative writing class (which is now over :( ). How can people can get 50, 100, 300 pages into a book and then just give up on it? I have a new fascination with the writing process so I found this quite interesting.
#3 Go Easy on Yourself, a New Wave of Research Urges - You know the saying "Treat others as you would like to be treated?" Well for some people, it needs to go the other way, "Treat yourself (and speak to yourself) as you'd speak to a friend." Apparently being hard on yourself isn't especially effective. (Noted.)
#4 One Way to Encourage Checking Out at the Library - This article reports on a new trend in libraries- dating! A few libraries across the country even set up speed dating night. I think it's awesome. especially for those of us who aren't crazy bar goers, and let's be honest, who wants to meet their significant other in a bar? Ok, ok. I know there's a few bar success stories but this puritan think meeting your soul mate in a library sounds a little more wholesome.
Let me know what you think!

#55 Some thoughts on the Oscars: A list
365 Blog Challenge: Post #55
1) I loved Anne Hathaway as host. I think she's charming, funny and beautiful. However, I wasn't feeling it from James Franco so much. I felt like Anne was pulling his weight. I I think he's spreading himself too thin in his 10,000 masters programs. A co-worker of mine said that she thinks he was just being himself and she was surprised that he was even asked to be a host considering his personality, but I say he's an actor. Ham it up!
2) Love Natalie Portman. Glad she won the Oscar. I love everything she said in her speech. She seems so down to earth. On a side note, I hated her hair.
3) Another great speech of the night, Colin Firth. What a charming Brit.
4) Jennifer Hudson was the most blah presenter I have ever seen. Scott holds that she is not a good actor and the only reason that she won the Oscar a few years back is because of the "I am telling you..." solo in Dream Girls. He says anyone who does that solo is bound to win the Oscar. So it seems, because she's obviously not much of a performer outside of singing. AND while J. Hud looked great tonight overall and looks awesome with her weight loss, I thought her butt was going to bust through her dress. Too tight in the rear! (Can't find a good picture to show this.)
5) 14-year-old Halie Steinfeld wins my vote for my age appropriate ensemble...which isn't saying much because she was the youngest nominee this year. But I still think she looked adorable and beautiful!
6) Thank you Penelope Cruise for not getting back to your pre-baby figure apx 4 weeks after giving birth. She still looked gorgeous, but it's so glad to see her looking imperfect! So life-like.
7) My sister pointed out to me that Jennifer Lawrence, nominee for Winter's Bone, would look exactly like a Baywatch life guard if you only saw her from the waist up.
8) Most awkward presenter(s) award goes to Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis who seemed almost too laid back to me, like they had some kind of rapport with each other but not with the audience. (And I had no idea what JT was talking about when he said "I'm Banksy" until I saw a clip of Exit Through the Gift Shop during the documentary clips. I feel I am not alone)
9) Reese Witherspoon, 2 words- Class Act.
10) No big surprise winners of the night, am I right? At least not for the big stuff. I was hoping Jesse Eisenberg would run away with a surprise best actor win, but then we'd never hear Colin Firth's adorable speech so I suppose all is right in the world.

#54 Unbearable Lightness
365 Blog Challenge: Post #54
The first time I saw Portia de Rossi on Ally McBeal, I thought she was one of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen. This made her memoir, Unbearable Lightness, all the more interesting as it gives a glimpse of the inner workings of de Rossi's formerly eating-disordered mind. It's well known that individuals with eating disorders have an altered self-image but never have I had such an in-depth look at this phenomenon. De Rossi, a former model, doesn't withhold anything in her book, and I was blown away at the brutality of her inner monologue. She is forthcoming with the gruesome details of her eating disorder such as blood vessels bursting above her eyes after a purge or eating Cheetos so she can keep track of how much she has thrown up (bright orange Cheetos being a marker of mid-binge.) She also goes into detail about her obsession with exercise and her caloric limitations (at one point she was only eating 300 calories a day on a regular basis.)
Not only does de Rossi describe her life with an eating disorder in this book, she tells the story of herself as a closeted gay actor who felt she had to fit a certain mold to be successful in Hollywood. It is a perfect example of how exterior pressure can wreak havoc on a susceptible individual and create a monster of the mind. While Portia starved and berated herself, people such as myself were sitting at home thinking what a beautiful, talented woman she is.
The book doesn't give much detail on de Rossi's recovery, which she claims is complete. The epilogue, which wasn't as well-written as the rest of the book, does give a brief overview of her first serious gay relationship and makes some mention of her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres. At least this story has a happy ending. I love Portia and Ellen as a couple.
I was sucked into this book from the start. I read the first 200 pages in about 24 hours and would have finished earlier if I wasn't spending time with my family. Though the book does include the occasional clumsy sentence, de Rossi has a distinct voice (It helps that I heard a podcast in which Portia reads an excerpt from her book in her own voice) and an incredible story to tell. I am lending the book to my mom and sister who can't wait to see what I was raving about.

New York Happenings, November 2007 Edition
To my friends and family,
Some advice: Never take 8.5 credits of science classes while working full time and inviting your parents and your boyfriends parents to visit on successive weekends while your boyfriend performs in his thesis production which is a 3 hour long, deep play about sex and racial diversity in NY in the early 1960s.
That basically sums up the last month of my life and may I add that I had a microbiology and a chemistry test while my parents were in town?? I am exhausted!! Thank goodness for Thanksgiving! I am thankful for not having to work and getting to sleep in tomorrow! Not much else has been going on around here. Scott's thesis production was a great success! And my dad stayed awake through the whole thing (unlike during Phantom which my mom and him also saw while they were here.) My parents visit was great but felt short as I had to study and attend class a lot of the time they were here. So basically, I saw them for meals (but they were some darn good ones!)

A few interesting citings of the last month include: 1) A 65+ year old woman with a walker and a labrae piercing. (See pic). I definitely did a double take.2) A guy on
the subway who wore a kipa (we've discussed what these are before my Catholic family members), but the kipa was specially made to with a "Geek Squad" symbol on it. What a geek. (Scott's joke).3) My crush from Legally Blonde the Musical (which my friend Amelia and I saw on Halloween and oh how we wish Amy L. could have joined us!!), Christian Borle, standing next to me on the subway (I LOVED this musical. I recommend everyone watch it on MTV tomorrow because they're playing it there.)
And Christian Borle happens to look a lot like Scott when he's acting...go figure. Of course I was too shy to say anything to him so I didn't get confirmation but I'm like 95% sure that it was him...even though my coworkers think that I'm crazy because I claim to see so many celebrities. They're all over the place here! I swear!
In terms of the Broadway stagehand strke, my parents lucked out and saw the last show of the Phantom of the Opera before the strike. But Scott, his family and I weren't so lucky. We missed multiple shows because of the strike though his family got to see Xanadu. In an attempt to get all of you to visit my blog ( http://newyorkhappenings.blogspot.com/) I am going to post pics from my parents visit up there as its much easier to put them there than to add them to an email. So visit soon!
Happy Turkey Day,
Lauren
p.s. Scott and I will not be having turkey this Thanksgiving…we will be having family style Italian with 2 of his classmates at Carmines on 91 st and Bway. Can't wait!

Parenting skills...
Yesterday while riding the bus to work in the Bronx, I observed some parenting skills probably comparable to Brit Brit's (Britney Spears that is). A woman, probably in her early to mid 20s, was sitting across from me with 2 toddlers (adorable might I add). I was alarmed when she was swearing profusely into her phone telling someone he was "wasting her fucking minutes" and calling him names. The kids were both crying, one because her pacifier had fell on the floor and the mom wasnt giving it back because it was dirty. The mom proceeded to tell the youngest to "shut up" because she was whining about the pacifier. When we got to their stop, the mom grabbed the youngest girl and basically tossed her to a man who was waiting for them at the bus. She then grabbed the other little girl from her seat who didnt seem to want to leave and tried to stand her ground. The mom violently took the girl by the arms and carried her off the bus. She then proceeded to bitch at the girl and yell more obscenities at the guy. As the bus door closed, an abrupt burst of spanish took over as multiple hispanohablantes were watching this whole incident and I couldn't have gotten a word in at all over the clamor of chatter.....Oh the Bronx.
P.S. Also in the Bronx, which was about 50 degrees this AM, I saw a girl eating a popcicle. Interesting.

Jukebox The Ghost!
Jukebox the Ghost (below)

Ok everyone, I am aware I've been a sucky blogger lately. However, working full time and putting in overtime plus taking 8 credits at school (of science classes for God's sake) is kind of putting me over the edge! In fact, I stayed home Tuesday due to a nasty cold I developed (that I probably/possibly got from my friend Julia but I'll forgive her because she's fun and because its probably my fault that I've comprimised my immune system with all of this stress and activity. Awesome)
I've actually been wanting to blog all week about Julia's brother's band, Jukebox the Ghost, who Scott and I saw play last Friday at Piano's in the East Village (check out the map at the bottom of the blog people). Hopefully even those of you who don't MySpace can see that link because they are fantastic and super fun to see in concert. Very charistmatic and their creativity is abound in their shows! (Did I use abound in the right context??) They're playing tomorrow night at Piano's again if anyone is interested in going. I highly recommend them and think they could go far!! Lots of talent. (By the way, I hope you guys don't mind I stole a picture from your website...its for your benefit really...I swear!)
Maybe Perez Hilton should post something about them as when he posts artists, they seem to become HUGE over night....and it would give
him something to blog about besides Britney Spears who we're all aware at this point is a train wreck and at first it was entertaining but now its just getting depressing to watch. Notice in this picture she is snapping...as if that could make up for her horrible lack of effort and awareness of choreography at the VMAs. Oh sigh.

Oh sigh.In other news, Jamie and Steve Held (the Jamie formerly known as Flaherty) were in NY last weekend and treated Scott and I to a delicious brunch at Cafe du Soleil, despite the fact that Steve's eggs benedict took a mysterious hour to cook....it must have been an extra special eggs benedict. Also, my sis and Steve are FINALLY coming to the city today! Both of them are New York virgins so it will be an exciting trip. Lets just hope my stupid (inflamed?) ankle holds up its end of the deal and I can go places with them. Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend! I know I will with good company and another showing of Xanadu! Much love all. :) LB
p.s. Brit Brit picture courtesey of some other site that probably stole it from another site...does that count as citing my source?
p.p.s. Is it just me or is this BR model compeltely disgusting?

New York Happenings: Volume 14 (Quite frankly, I don't know how to write that in roman numerals)
Dearest friends and family,
The summer has come and gone and I am just about ready for that due to the fact that I have not worn sandals once this summer due to my stupid ankle except for at Jackie Harris's wedding in which I wore them for about an hour and then switched into the boot. Let's hope the fall brings cool weather, closed toe shoes and healed ankles.
For anyone still interested in my ankle news after all this time, here's the latest: I finally threw in the towel and gave up on my podiatrist who had given me 2 cortisol injections. While these helped, I knew they weren't addressing the problem as my ankle is still weak and I still have pain radiating up my leg and in my knee sometimes. Awesome. I needed to find someone who wouldn't dance around my constant sources of frustration with a needle full of drugs but would grab me by the ankle and say, "Look, your ligaments don't support your body in general, so having an injury on top of loose ligaments is taking all them ore time to heal." Which is exactly what my NEWEST podiatrist, Dr. Louis Galli told me. I was referred to him after I wrote my primary care doctor (only MD I trust in NY) to tell her of my frustrations and ask her advise. 3 months of sprained ankleness is just ridiculous. Dr. Galli is a foot and ankle specialist and works in dance medicine so he works with people with my loose ligament problem all the time. Good news is, I trust him. bad news is, more physical therapy which means more money which I don't really have. But it's worth it. I am starting with a new physical therapist on Wednesday who works with dancers and "knows about my kind of injury." I'll keep you updated. Month 4 of the ankle injury saga continues...
In other news, I have started class again and remember why I didn't like science classes to begin with: I HATE LABS. Honestly, lecture me all you want. Make me do the lab but explain it to me one on one without dozens of other people standing in front of me trying to see what you're doing. And for God's sake, give me a chair (my chemistry lab which is almost 3 hours does not have chairs in it..awesome for injured ankle girl.) BUT I am enjoying microbiology...can't say the same for Chemistry which is every Sunday from 9-3. I feel like i should be getting paid for being somewhere that long if I'm not enjoying myself. But I will push on!
I have also had 3 celebrity sitings since we last spoke..or should I say in the last week. The most exciting of which was Chris Noth (Mr. Big from Sex and the City) who was at the Bronx VA filming Law and Order Criminal Intent last week and who stopped to speak with my two coworkers and I even though they were invasively holding up camera phones and snapping his pick. I"m convinced he thought we were cute. For more info and pics, see the blog. I also saw the back of Dustin Hoffman's head (not too exciting) at 65th and Central Park West. And Scott and I saw Montel Williams (of talk show glory) walking out of AMC Loew's theater at 42nd and 8th on Saturday on our way to a play. He looked scruffy, but good.
Bizzaro land (aka New York City) has continued to fascinate me this month, especially this past weekend when I was standing at the corner of 95th and Broadway waiting for my friend Julia who was actually coming up 96th towards broadway but that's a whole other story. I noticed an older guy, 50s or 60s, walking a large poodle with a camera around his neck talking to 2 other guys. I basically just thought it was strange that some grey haired man with semi long hair was walking a poodle with a camera around his neck. This is why it stood out. My mind wandered else where until I saw the guy rushing back across 95th street, to the middle of the street and I looked over to see his poodle waiting patiently for him on the sidewalk. The guy picked up his camera as to take a picture of the poodle (so I thought) but then I realized he was taking a picture of little old me. I kind of tried to ignore this but it was hard when he came back, picked up the leash to his large poodle and snapped another picture of me standing there with a bewildered look on my face. The only explanation for this is that he thought I was Anna Paquin (or that is my conceded and hopeful explanation). Otherwise, I don't get it. I wasn't even looking cute. It was too hot. I had been sweating all day and I've been wearing tennis shoes for the past 3 months and just feel I can't look cute until the days I can don flats again.
So there you have it folks. August/September in the city. Looking forward to a visit from Jamie and Steve Held this weekend followed by a visit from Erin and Steve the next weekend. Can't wait to show them my little town. Happy September. Stay cool. Protect those ankles. Love, Lauren
p.s. Blog subscriptions are still available..and in fact will be available as long as I am writing the blog..but continue to email me if you'd like to subscribe and I'll set it all up. :)

Mr. Big is nice....
We waited a good 15-20 minutes total and it paid off! We got to see the VERY attractive Chris Noth in person and he even talked to us (as they were taking his picture with camera phones). He was very friendly and we are all STAR STRUCK!!! By the way, for those of you crazies who don't know who Chris Noth is, think "Mr. Big" from Sex and the City. Hot.

Silly Little Gummy Bears....
I am having a tough time focusing today. Maybe it's because I leave for Minnesota in less than 48 hours, and I while I'm there I will turn 24, get to see my family, some of my closest friends and I won't have to think about work for almost 2 weeks. Then again, maybe its because of the Lindsay fiasco. In fact, I think that may be the more likely reason.
For those of you who don't yet know, Lindsay Lohan is my heterosexual girl crush, you know, one of those celebrities of your own sex who mesmerizes you....ok....maybe I'm the only one who has one of those...but for those of you who can't claim celebrity gossip as their guilty pleasure, I must let you know that Lindsay was arrested in the wee hours of this (Tuesday) morning for a DUI. Yes, ALREADY! Turns out (according to Perez Hilton and the associated press...both very reliable sources...I swear...) that one of Lindsay's personal assistants quit a few hours before her arrest and Lindsay proceeded to engage in a car chase the personal assistant's mother or another personal assistant (the facts are not yet clear) with Lindsay being the chaser. Speaking of chasers...Lindsay had a blood alcohol level of .13 (.08 is the legal limit)and cocaine in her possession when she was arrested after the chasee called 911.
Oh poor misguided Lindsay. My co-worker Amelia B and I have analyzed this extensively. Seeing as how I have a BA in psychology and Amelia has an MS in mental health counseling, I think we are pretty reliable sources. We've decided that since she doesn't have the familial support of Paris Hilton (who seems to be getting her shit together) she is just lacking the support she needs to get better. Her dad is an ex-con, her mother I've never had a personal problem with but who some say is just as wild as Lindsay. We've decided that the only person who can help her is her Grams, whose name I can't quite remember because I can't get to PerezHilton.com on a VA computer and because I don't want to spend anymore of my air time minutes on my new phone. She is still in good old Long Island and we all know how grounded people from Long Island are. (Actually, I've met some friendly people from Long Island....AND some not so friendly people). We even discussed how perhaps I should become Lindsay's family to support her but we decided that wouldn't have my best interests at heart because at this point in time I am lacking trust in her.
And just so you know, I am only half joking about most of this stuff. It's quite sad and I've had a lot of down time today to ponder it. I'll let you know if I come up with any solutions. Right now, I'm just glad Lindsay is following my advice by checking back into rehab. Glad I could be there for her right now.
38 hours until plane time (at the time this post is being written). Can't wait! MN: HERE I COME!!!
In the mean time, I'll continue to chow down on my gummy bears and watch the clock until 5pm rolls around. Happy Tuesday. MWA!

Thats hot.
And no, I don't mean Paris Hilton getting out of jail. (Though I must say she looked the most attractive I've ever seen her with her natural, make-up free skin.) I mean it being 83 degrees at 9:30 in the morning (though weather.com says it feels like 88 due to humidity). Ick. It is hot. And hot in New York is miserable. It is not refreshing, cool breezed filled hot. It is not warm, soak up the sun hot. It is humid, sticky, thick stinkin hot. Keep in mind for those of us who don't make more than, say $50,000, and probably some of those who do, we can't afford to take cabs everywhere. And that means public transportation. And I promise you, if its 83 degrees outside, its at least 10-15 degrees hotter in the underground subway stations. Some may imagine its cooler down there, out of the sun. But just imagine millions of bodies occupying this space daily (which is open to the street above through vents and stairways, etc). It is like a brick oven. I feel like a frickin deep dish pizza sitting down there in the AM. And it doesn't help that:
#1 I am a natural sweater.
#2 I am on medication that makes me sweat more
#3 I have to walk at least 5 minutes to get to any subway station
#4 I am a natural sweater who is on medication that makes me sweat and I have to walk at least 5 minutes to get to any subway station.
It is seriously embarrassing. My damn eccrine and apocrine sweat glands (that's a little anatomy and physiology talk for you) are on overload and people often stare at me. Some even ask me if I'm ok. And I look up at them with water pouring out of ever pore in my face and say, "Yes, I'm fine thanks." Damn Minnesota nice. Oh well....my co-workers and I are planning a rain dance later this afternoon and we'll pretty sure it'll work. So we're hoping for some great thunder storms tonight and some breezy 70 degree weather tomorrow. Hope all of you are staying cool. Stay away from New York for a few days. We don't need any more bodies heating this place up!!
