HAAIIIR! Flow it...show it...loooonnng as I can grow it my HAAAIIIIRRR

On August 31st, Scott and I, being the crazy kids that we are, arrived at Central Park at 6am to wait in line to get tickets to Hair, which is part of these year's Shakespeare In the Park season. This rendition was directed (quite well I may add) by Diane Paulus who also happened to direct Scott's thesis production, Another Country. I just found out yesterday, thanks to PerezHilton.com that the show is transferring to Broadway. This is well deserved I think! There are spectacular performances by the actors who play Berger, Wolf and Jeanie, and many of the others as well. So here are the pics of our fun day together which began around 5:15am!!

Here is the tree that we sat underneath in line which proceeded to drop numerous acorns on us throughout the morning. Scott was convinced he would develop PTSD from the acorn attacks.

Here is the sweeeetest puppy in the world, Otter, who was in line next to us. We watched him all morning and he never failed to entertain us. I want one, just like him. Unfortunately my eosinophils and basophils won't allow it.

While we sat there for 7 hours, we had to come up with ways to entertain ourselves. I created Pepe, the acorn/stick man. He died eventually.

Scott made a collection of all of the intact acorns that he found pictured above. It was a long wait people.

But it was nice to have each other's company!

Here is the line, perhaps hard to see but let's just say it was LOOOONNNGGG. Not everyone gets tickets. It pays to get there at 6am.

Sing and Huling came with us to the show. They get to wait in line for us next year. Sweet!

Scott sniffing the flower that was actually given to Huling by one of the character's in the show, and he then gave it to me, and we went onstage to dance at the end to "LEEETTT THE SUUUNNNSHINNNEE!" What a feel good experience!

A visit from the rents....

My dad and Katrin Eismann who wrote a book he likes about Photoshop. We had lunch with her and she was very nice. They tried to keep the shop talk (photo shop that is) to a minimum....and they sort of succeeded.

I don't know where this is but its cute so I'm including it.

Xanadu gets a New York Times- DO!!

I'm excited to announce that our beloved roller disco musical got a good review from the Times! Check out this partially clever, partially wordy review here: CLICK ME!

It isn't often that I leave a Broadway play saying, "I want to see that again!". This is not because I have seen poor performances or lame writing. In fact, the shows I've seen on Broadway have been some of my favorites: Sweeney Todd, Spring Awakening, Coram Boy, Light in the Piazza. I loved all of those and more. However, seeing it once is enough. I often feel that way about movies. I don't like knowing whats going to happen because I've seen it already. I find that boring.

However, when I left Helen Hayes theater on Friday night after seeing Xanadu on Broadway, I said to Scott, "I want to see it again! No, I want to rent the movie, see it again and then buy a t-shirt!" It takes a pretty entertaining show to get that kind of reaction out of me. And Xanadu was just that.

Briefly, Xanadu is based on a movie of the same name that was made in the late 70s and starred Olivia Newton-John (post-Grease phenomenon) as a muse (as in ancient Greek muse) named Clio who falls in love with a mortal named Sonny Malone she is trying to inspire and who, thanks to her help, has an artistic vision of building a roller disco. Sound stupid? It is! But that's what makes it so brilliant! The show never hesitates to make fun of itself. From Kerry Butler's horrendous Australian accent to Jackie Hoffman's off the wall facial expressions, here are the top 10 Reasons to go see Xanadu:

10) Because Perez Hilton is quoted outside the theater as saying in regards to the show: "Do you love it, or do you LOVE it???" (I love it!)

9) Cheyenne Jackson (who replaced James Carpinello after a roller skating accident...no joke!) is wearing short jean shorts for most of the show and he is quite attractive.

8) Because Mary Testa and Jackie Hoffman make the best evil duo ever..."Let us not giggle! Let us cackle!!"

7) Because of Kerry Butler's voice. Enough said.

6) Because of the excellent special effects when Clio is returning to Mount Olympus (picture a statue of Pegasus rising up, surrounded by wooden clouds alternating in height).

5) Because Kerry Butler butchers both the Australian and southern accents...on purpose

4) Because it's about a roller disco

3) Because Kerry Butler spends almost the entire musical on roller skates

2) Because although there are 2 men playing muses, Clio refers to all of them as her sisters

AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON TO SEE XANADU ON BROADWAY IS:

1) Did I mention that Cheyenne Jackson wears short shorts?? That's hot.

Shakespeare in the Park

So my boyfriend is crazy. He told me he wanted to get Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare in the Park tickets. Shakespeare in the Park happens every summer. The Public Theater puts on a couple productions each summer in this great outdoor theater in Central Park. Last year, Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline were in Mother Courage which Scott saw. This year, Lauren Ambrose and Cameryn Manheim were to play Juliet and her nurse respectively. Scott was excited. So excited he convinced me to get up at 5 am to meet our friend (and his classmate) Sing and get in line at 6 am for these tickets. Little did I know when he convinced me to do this that they didn't hand tickets out until 1 pm. We would be sitting in line for 7 HOURS! However, despite my grumbling, Scott convinced me to go, and we had a great time! We were behind about 10 people so we knew we were going to get tickets. It was just a matter of waiting. The man in front of us was sleeping (as many were) and he was snoring like a freight train. We were in line for about 15-20 minutes when a group of 3 kids and 2 adults got in line behind us. I had a bad feeling about this...and it turns out the (apx) 9 year old girl that belonged to the man was an absolute terror. But we still managed to enjoy ourselves. Obviously not us.... :) Btw, we're eating Ritz crackers here....the only food we thought to bring. Luckily, the people from The Public had this deal worked out with "Andy's Deli" (some mediocre deli that delivered to the line in the park). Phew! We were hungry by the time we got our food around 10:45!!!

This is the dog we deemed a "weiner fox". (Looked like half weiner dog, half fox). Scott couldn't believe how many of these dogs kept walking by us....until I pointed out that it was the same dog. His excuse was that he was tired. Psh. Whatever. ;)

This picture is a little hard to see (and I need a new digital camera because my zoom feature no longer works). But this is the line. And it goes way beyond what you can see in this picture. (Past those trees in the back). Good thing we were in the front!

And here we are...7 hours later with our 4 tickets to Romeo and Juliet. (We went w/ our friend Huling as well). And the show was fabulous. As Huling said, this is what Shakespeare is supposed to be. It was moving and fresh. (And both Lauren Ambrose and Cameryn Manheim were great, as were the guys who played Romeo and Mercutio (the latter of which we saw last fall in "The Pain and the Itch" off broadway. Another fabulous play). Despite the exhaustion I felt Monday morning, I'd say the experience was well worth it. We may even do it again next month to see A Midsummer Night's Dream. Yes....we're nuts.
